With the hydroelectricity development booming in China, the number of underground caverns increases dramatically. In this paper, the large underground caverns of three representative projects in southwestern China (the 6300 MW Longtan hydroelectricity project, the 6400 MW Xiangjiaba hydroelectricity project, and the 3600 MW Jinping I hydroelectricity project) are introduced. Different failure modes were observed in the deeply dipped rock at the Longtan project during construction, while the arch of large spanned powerhouse represented the biggest challenge at the Xiangjiaba project. At the Jinping I project, various phenomena of instability showed the obvious time-dependant responses of rock mass. To ensure the rock stability, tremendous efforts have been made in design and construction.
