The No.15 bid project of Beijing subway Line 14 includes 3 stations and 3 running tunnels about 2507.9 m in length. Instead of two running tunnels, one double-track tunnel was arranged to connect the neighboring stations due to the limited underground space. To reduce the project duration, the construction plan employed is innovative of first completing the continued 3151.6 m long tunnel construction (including two stations and running tunnels) and then forming the two stations in the middle by enlarging the finished tunnel. A 10.22 m diameter earth pressure balance shield with the spoke-type cutter head was chosen to excavate the double track tunnel. The enlargement was realized by using a modified Pile-Beam-Arch method, which is widely accepted in Beijing subway station construction. Then the construction scheduling is running tunnel construction oriented instead of centering on the station construction to develop the construction planning, as greatly reduced waiting and transfer time of the shield machine. Some stations can be planned in advance and constructed when necessary using the enlarging excavation method. With the many improvements in the shield tunneling and the expanding excavation, the project was completed as planned. The novel construction and arrangement can provide good references for similar projects.
