Cutterhead type and cutting tools configuration are two important considerations for the design of a shield machine. A comprehensive analysis of the cutterhead selection and cutting tools configuration of a shield machine in a sandy cobble stratum indicates that cutterhead selection more significantly impacts shield machine operation than cutting configuration. A spoke-type cutterhead and a belt screw conveyor with a diameter of 800 mm are the optimal choices for tunneling in a sandy cobble stratum. The cutting tool configuration of cutter bits, pre-cutting bits, fish-tail bits and shell-type bits has an obvious advantage compared to other configurations. This paper provides an improved design scheme for the spoke-type cutterhead. This scheme shows significant promise for the future design and tunneling operations of shield machines in sandy cobble Strata.
