Tehri pump storage project (1000MW), an integral project to the entire Tehri Hydro Power Scheme of 2400MW, aims to harness the full potential of the river Bhagirathi. The project at the moment is in the advance stage of construction. Tehri pump storage project (hereafter referred to as PSP), comprising four reversible pump turbine units of 250 MW each, involves construction of an Underground Machine Hall on the left bank of river Bhagirathi. The main feature of the Project is the large variation of about 90 m between the maximum and minimum head, under which the reversible units shall operate. The operation of the Tehri PSP is based on the concept of recycling the water that is discharged from the upper reservoirs to the lower reservoir. As an integral part of the Tehri Hydro Power Complex (HPC) located in the state of Uttarakhand in northern India, an underground 4 x 250 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) is under construction by the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) parallel and close to the existing 1000 MW Tehri Hydro Power Plant (HPP). The major project components under construction are a machine hall, upstream surge shafts with chamber-3&4, butterfly valve chamber (BVC) and upper Penstock assembly chamber (PAC), downstream surge shafts (D/S surge shafts), a pair of tail race tunnels (TRTs) and outlet structures. The contract for construction of Civil packages of this mega project has been awarded to M/s Hindustan Construction Co Limited on EPC mode.
