There are quite a few examples of TBM projects that have suffered low progress and high cost due to improper design of TBM and cutters. Dealing with massive, homogeneous, abrasive and extreme hard rock with UCS in the range of 100-300 MPa, will demand a specific design of TBM and cutters. In Norway, such hard rock conditions are common and the experiences gained from TBM boring of tunnels since the early 1970-ties have been implemented on many projects in Norway and abroad as well. This paper will focus on design parameters that have to be taken into account in specifying a TBM for hard and massive rock conditions. This will include design of cutters, cutterhead, main bearing assembly and the rest of the TBM system. This TBM design will then be illustrated by examples from the Follo Line Railway tunnel having such rock conditions. Based upon geological investigations and extensive testing of rock samples, the Project owner set strict requirements to the TBM design already in the invitation to tender. The results from the tunnel boring so far will be presented.
