Redesign of the rock support, in the bus ramps of Stockholm bypass, due to changing geology
The Stockholm bypass is a 21 km long motorway west of Stockholm, Sweden. This paper presents the challenge due to unpredicted geological conditions during ongoing construction. The weakness zones containing graphite and clay were found to be more prominent and more unfavorable than predicted during the design. During the construction of the pre-cut the weakness zones were observed to strike more or less parallel to the tunnels, thus introducing a hazard of shear failure of the roof/crown area. The designer came up with two solutions that could be applied, one with shotcrete ribs and one with steel mesh and shotcrete. After mapping the rock surface the final rock support was determined and the weak areas have been successfully advanced through.Recipient :
