Tunneling through active fault zone is a high risk job and could have a big impact on the construction program. Hence it is essential to grasp the condition of the ground ahead of tunnel face beforehand so that early countermeasure can be planned and implemented. This paper includes a construction of 1.8km length of road tunnel called Shioteyama tunnel and will pass by a major active fault zone called Futaba Fault. TSP303 method was adopted in this project as it has features such as long range prediction, short measuring time and spatial distribution. TSP data acquisition by normal explosive and non-dynamite method were tested and compared. At the same time, other exploration method includes horizontal core boring and our own developed seismic prospecting method called S- BEAT were carried out. This paper will emphasize on TSP results, its practicability and effectiveness, as well as countermeasures implemented such as immediate ring closure method.
