Reconstruction of the Rocsky Tunnel

Rocsky motorway tunnel was built in 1986 with a purpose to provide the way through The Main Caucasian Ridge at the Rocsky nek between North and South Ossetia, on the 93 kilometer of the Transcaucasian highway 2000 m above sea level. Total length of the tunnel is 3730 m. There is a multifunctional adit with total length of 3805 m running parallel to the tunnel. During 2003-2007 a thorough survey of the tunnel was conducted. According to the expert report, the tunnel had significant construction defects caused by mistakes during construction stage and poor quality of construction process. Furthermore, almost all tunnel equipment broke down. Subsequently, a decision of complete reconstruction of tunnel complex was made. Minskmetroproject decided to tackle this problem.
