Tunnel Excavation in Carbonate Rocks – Drilling and Blasting Calculation

Tunnel Excavation in Carbonate Rocks – Drilling and Blasting Calculation

J. Šintić

Since the end of the 20th century, the intense transport infrastructure construction in Croatia has been characterized by the building of numerous road tunnels, especially on routes connecting Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik and Zagreb – Rijeka. All of the tunnels were excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), mostly by applying the drill and blast technology. This is mainly because the tunnels are excavated in different types of carbonate rocks, with frequent rock category changes and the appearance of many caves, zawns and karst sinkholes. Considering the abrupt geological and geotechnical changes, the determination of precise geomechanical rock mass properties and their design implementation are both very important.
