The State Route 99 (SR 99) tunnel is set to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV), which is nearing the end of its service life. Upon completion, the SR 99 tunnel will be the largest in diameter (17.5 meters). The tunneling process will be performed by the use of an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named Bertha. Intecsa-Inarsa was part of the Design Team led by HNTB since the bidding process to the Final Design, being in charge of the tunnel-induced settlement assessment and mitigation measures design. For buildings, a three-stage settlement and potential damage analysis methodology was defined.
