Preliminary studies for the new metro tunnel beneath the Palais du Midi, Brussels
The ambitious project of transformation of Brussels Tramway lines 3 and 4 to Metro lines leads to the realization of a 170m-long mined tunnel, to be excavated a few meters underneath the “Palais du Midi”, an historical building built in the 19th century and for which the stability must be insured during and after the excavations. The tunnel will connect the future Constitution Station, conceived with central platforms, to the existing tramway, cut-and-cover tunnel. The tunnel will host the two tracks, which alignment will progressively diverge, from the cut-and-cover tunnel towards the “Constitution Station”. Hence, the section of the tunnel has been conceived in order to accommodate the diverging track alignments coping at the same time with the low overburden beneath the “Palais du Midi”.Recipient :
