Existing underground structures in the vicinity of new constructions

R. Katzenbach / S. Leppla / M. Seip

Large construction projects in inner cities have an influence not only on neighbouring buildings at the surface, but also on existing underground structures, e.g. tunnels and stations of urban metros systems. The influence on existing underground structures can be caused by the construction of new buildings or by the deconstruction of existing structures. The stability and the serviceability of the existing underground structures, especially the sealing systems and tunnel block joints, have to be considered during the planning phase, the design phase and the construction phase. Due to the complexity of large construction projects in the vicinity of existing underground structures an independent peer review and the observational method have to be applied. The necessity to con- sider the occuring soil-structure interaction is shown by two complex large construction projects in the vicinity of existing underground structures in difficult soil and groundwater conditions. The procedure for a safe planning, design and construction is explained.
