The A2 Maastricht motorway tunnel is a 2-storey, 4-tube tunnel that runs through the city of Maastricht. The tunnel is part of an integral project where infrastructure and urban planning are realised in a combined approach. After the project had been awarded, the Dutch Tunnel Stan- dard was developed and implemented in the project. An impact analysis showed, that despite a number of deviations, implementation of the Tunnel Standard would be possible. Due to the 2- storey tunnel construction, the sewage system e.g. is non-standard in comparison to conventional sewage systems. The 2 x 2 tube layout forced the designers to choose a transverse layout with a sewage line from the gullies crossing the floor and collecting in a longitudinal sewage line below the escape channel, which is located between the tunnel tubes. The design philosophy of the sumps regarding tunnel safety is also deviant from the Dutch tunnel standard regarding transition spaces and venting. For all such project-specific deviations (issues) against the tunnel standard, an issue advisory board can be consulted for approval of the issue and possible change of the tunnel Standard.
