The exceptional Doha Metro Project in Qatar is an unprecedented challenge to the Designers and Contractors. The geological and geo-hydrological conditions are extremely hard, beside of the variable hard medium or weak soft rock layers (like Simsima, Midra shale or Rus Formation lime stones) with the hardly detectable karstic features like smaller or larger voids, holes and cavities. The groundwater is highly aggressive with chlorides and sulphate. In these conditions the Employer Qatar Rail laid the highest possible quality, durability and sustainability requirements in the Tender Bulletins for the Bidders. But the careful design and the professional construction with the “state of the art” technology EPB Shield TBMs makes the high quality and accuracy tunnel construction possible even in the densely built city centers, or in the adjacent of the sensitive high-rise buildings, or the old monuments and palaces. As the stations’ construction sites or the launching areas are limited in space the high accuracy of launching and receiving of the TBMs are basic priority. These are the main requirements of the well invented, developed and accurately designed and executed temporary structures to serve the mechanized tunneling technology. The applicable temporary structures are designed case by case according to the different features of each Station.
