The $8.3 billion North West Rail Link (NWRL) is currently the biggest public transport project in Australia. It represents the first stage of the Sydney Rapid Transit scheme, the city’s new rapid transit railway network. Part of the project is the $1.15 billion NWRL tunnelling contract, which involves the construction of Australia’s longest railway tunnels - 15km twin-tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping, along with the excavation of five new railway stations along the route. The tun- nelling contract was awarded to Thiess John Holland Dragados (TJHD) JV in June, 2013. Four Double Shield (DS) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), manufactured by NFM, have been em- ployed to carry out the excavation and lining of the rail tunnels. The geology along the alignment comprises of competent, medium strength Sydney sandstone as well as low abrasive, laminated siltstone and shale. At this stage, all four TBMs have been successfully launched and are fully op- erational. The drives are scheduled for completion by early 2016
