MOSE project, Immersion of caissons within less than 10mm
The Mose Project is a system of movable barriers which will protect Venice and its lagoon from ever more frequent and intensive flooding. The Chioggia inlet is one of the three gaps between the sea and the lagoon where these barriers will be installed. The barrier of the Chioggia inlet consists of eight caissons, two shoulder caissons and six gate caissons. The caissons are built in a dry dock close to the trench and are transported and immersed one by one using a pontoon for immersion of the gate caissons. After placement, floodgates will be connected to the caissons which can block the water flow into the lagoon when in action. A special item for this project was the very tight placing tolerances required for perfect working of the barrier. Placing tolerances of only +/- 10 mm were defined by the Client. To be able to meet those requirements the common survey systems had to be evaluated and improved. The same applies for the realignment and guiding systems to correct the position of the caissons if necessary. Finally, after placing all of the caissons in 2014, we can conclude that it is possible to position caissons within such tight tolerances.Recipient :
